Lupus and Cannabis: A Patient’s Story

T.C. was diagnosed with Lupus in 2011. As a busy mother of 3, she is determined to not let her diagnosis slow her down. This is her story.

5 years after my diagnosis, I started using medical marijuana. The previous 5 years were filled with more prescription pills than most people could imagine. If a doctor were to ask me what my pain level was (and is) daily, a 5/6 out of 10 is where I can comfortably function. Chronic pain is something that your body grows used to over time, but that does not make it any easier.

Pain killers, muscle relaxants, and anti-depressants were what I was being prescribed to treat my pain. But after 5 years, I was ready to try something more natural, with fewer side effects. A friend suggested medical marijuana. At first, I was apprehensive, but I did my research and decided to give it a shot.

If you are unsure about cannabis, don’t hesitate. Today I am no longer taking opiates, sleeping pills, or muscle relaxers. Cannabis oil has changed how I deal with my pain. I can fully participate in life again, without the dissociative effects I felt from several of the other medications that I was on. Though it was trial and error to find what worked best for me, I am glad I was patient. Medical marijuana has changed my life.
